The following is a follow-up to this morning’s update on the status of the property tax reform/relief package being debated in the North Dakota legislature:
HB 1168: A Game Of Chicken On Property Taxes
***Click here to contact your legislators now to let them know you want the maximum amount of property tax relief and to not limit the benefit that the lowest income taxpayers receive***
In an act of diplomacy, House Republicans agreed to reduce the primary residence tax credit to $1,000 in exchange for the Senate Republican giving up their hardline stance to limit the value of the any credit to 75% of property tax due.
The initial vote was 4-2, but the final vote was 5-1.
The conference report now goes to the full House and Senate floor for a vote.
The House is likely to approve it, while its fate in the Senate could be determined by how strong Senate Majority Leader David Hogue’s ability to keep his members interested in stonewalling the process.
Then, if it passes both chambers, it will be up to Governor Kelly Armstrong to decide if he thinks it even does enough for his likens. As well as whether it is enough to keep another initiated measure off the ballot.
