School Is Mandatory, School Lunches Should Be Too
HB 1491 appropriated just under $90 million to make school lunches a covered part of school for all students.
Have you ever wondered why we have had laws for over a century mandating school for children, and we have truancy laws if they don’t show up for school, but yet don’t provide free lunch so that they can be ready to learn?
I’ve wondered this since I was in school.
The stigma of not being able to afford lunch, or having school lunch debt should be considered a form of bullying by the school and government itself.
House Bill 1491 would allocate just about $90 million per biennium to remedy this generation’s old problem.
This takes the burden off local school districts to levy special property taxes to make up for unpaid debts.
Yes, it subsidizes parents, but the entire K-12 funding system subsidizes the vast majority of parents already.
Whether the students will want to eat the school lunch will always be a problem, but at least under this provision, it will no longer be a factor of inequity mandated by the government.
