Republican Leadership Distorts Property Tax Reality
There is a game being played in the weeks after the legislature dismissed - that game is one of distorting the truth about property taxes.
In an email sent out today, the Republican Party is claiming that by dropping the 12% property tax credit and picking up the tab for county social services that somehow that will reduce property taxes.
This is very weak political spin as illustrated by the simple math
The 12% property tax credit cost the state nearly $350 million in the 2015-17.
The County Social Services funding will cost just over $160 million.
The difference between those number represents the REDUCTION in the state's involvement in property taxes.
In fact, $183 million that was previously earmarked for the property tax reduction was transferred to the general fund simply to balance the budget!
