It’s time to take a very brief look at what happened during Tuesday’s primary election.

Turnout was very low, despite the fact that the spending on ads (especially negative) was one of the highest ever in North Dakota.

Burleigh County Property Tax To Sales Tax Shift

As reported on election night, the Burleigh County ballot measure to shift county law enforcement costs away from property taxes to local sales tax passed.

The passage of this local tax measure proves voters want something, anything, to be done about property taxes. The legislature needs to look at meaningful, long-term, permanent property tax reforms next session.


Governor Burgum Requested Property Tax Reform Ideas, Here They Are

During his State of the State speech this week, Governor Doug Burgum stated of property tax reform: Burgum said it's the right time to right-size government. He said that means looking at return on investment and quality of results. Burgum said part of the change could include getting the state out of what he calls “the property tax buy-down business" -- which he said has multiple shortcomings.
