Governor Burgum Makes Hard Push On Income Tax Reform
Proposal is for a "flat income tax with a path to zero-percent"
Yesterday, Governor Doug Burgum presented his proposal for the next legislative session starting in January. While there are a lot of new spending proposals that are sure to generate plenty of debate and opposition, it is clear that this budget proposal is about legacy building - specifically when it comes to tackling issues that have been ignored for far too long.
“A Path To Zero Income Tax”
As was previously announced, a flagship issue for the governor and some in Republican Leadership is to finish the job of making North Dakota regionally competitive with its neighbors, specifically South Dakota and Wyoming, that do not levy a state income tax.
In his speech, Governor Burgum used some of the strongest conservative arguments in favor of this move:
