$650,000 State Grant Doesn't Save Huff Hills
Huff Hills ski area south of Mandan announces it is closing, no word on whether they are returning the $650,000 grant the state gave them in November.
Speaking of grants and wasteful corporate welfare, a new day brings us a new story about wasteful state spending at the North Dakota Commerce Department.
This morning the Bismarck Tribune is reporting that Huff Hills ski area is closing, which is unfortunate since it was a staple of so many kids growing up in this area - including myself.
Huff Hills Ski Area, a popular winter destination south of Bismarck, announced its closure on Tuesday after 33 years of operation.
Mountain Operations Manager Andrew Beck issued a statement, and also confirmed to the Tribune that the 2023-24 winter season will be the facility's last, citing the lease situation as the main obstacle to long-term investment and sustainability. After the conclusion of the facility's long-term lease, majority property owners told the ski area that they would only be able to offer year-to-year extensions -- which Beck said would make it hard to "justify investments" in infrastructure as it wasn't a guarantee of stability.
